Hermes Propylaios (reconstruction)

Name: Hermes Propylaios (reconstruction)
Material: Digital
Format: Herm
Location: The lost original was erected on the Acropolis, Athens in the Propylaia, according to Pausanias (1.22.8). We first experimented by placing it where Gorham Phillips Stevens (The Periclean Entrance Court of the Acropolis of Athens, Hesperia 5.4 [1936] 443-520, at pp. 446-447 with figure 2 [G]) situated it inside the Propylaia. Our studies of its appearance here raised doubts that this could be correct, since its visability would have been compromised by the front columns of the Propylaia. On the advice of our consultant Prof. Samuel Holzman, we addressed this problem by rotating it 90 degrees and by moving it slightly to a position where it would face visitors passing through the Propylaia.
