Location: The lost original by Pheidias was erected on the Acropolis, Athens, to the east of the Propylaia, as per Gorham Phillips Stevens, The Periclean Entrance Court of the Acropolis of Athens, Hesperia 5.4 (1936) 443-520 at pp. 454-455 with figures 7, 63. Cf. also Claire Cullen Davison, et al. Pheidias. The Sculptures and Ancient Sources, vol. 1 (Institute of Classical Studies, School of Advanced Study, University of London, 2009) 45-68. We have followed the proposal of Adolf Furtwängler, Masterpieces of Greek Sculpture, ed. A. N. Oikonomides (Chicago,1964) 3-45 (the book was originally published in 1895).
