Description The phenomenon of animal mummies arose during the New Kingdom (sixteenth to eleventh centuries BCE) and continued during the Late and Greek-Roman Periods (332 BCE-395 CE). A special category of animal mummies, named votive animal mummies, to which the cat mummy RC-1607 belonged, reached a peak between the Third Intermediate (1078-664 BCE) and the Roman Period. Based on its features, the cat mummy RC-1607 most likely comes from Istabl Antar (Speos Artemidos, Middle Egypt) and dates back to the Ptolemaic Period (332-30 BCE).
