Hadrian's Villa Reborn: Stadium Garden

Coming soon from Flyover Zone: Hadrian's Villa Reborn, Stadium Garden!

Here we see a reconstruction of a part of the complex known as the South Nymphaeum. The statues have been modeled photogrammetrically based on casts of the sculptural group, which depicts the myth of Niobe and the death of her 14 children shot by Artemis and Apollo. The two females on the extreme right are known only from fragments found at Hadrian's Villa and have been recreated by purely digital means. The Niobids are depicted as either dead, wounded (note the arrows), or agitated by fear and confusion. The clothing has been restored using the dark gray marble known as "bigio morato," as is attested by the surviving fragments. The Niobids' heads and limbs were made of realistically painted white marble. We do not know how the statues were arranged; seen here is one of many possible ways of doing so.
