Tiberius Julius Caesar Augustus. (The Emperor Tiberius, 42 BC - 37 AD; ruled from 14 - 37 AD). Roman, ca. 14 AD. Parian marble.This portrait comes from an over life-size statue of the emperor. It is possible that the back of the head, made separately, included a veil to cover the head, an item of clothing appropriate to a priest. The emperor served as chief priest (pontifex maximus).
