A team of scholars from the American School of Classical Studies bring to life the ruins of the Acropolis of Athens, the sanctuary of the city’s patron goddess Athena, in the year 330 BCE. You will see the major buildings, such as the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, and the Propylaia, reconstructed with all of their decorative colors and forms according to the latest studies. You will also encounter many famous mythological and historical figures, such as Athena and Perikles, in the form of statues mentioned by the second-century CE Greek travel writer Pausanias. Along the way you will learn about Classical Greek art and architecture, the real and legendary history of Athens, and the Athenian habit of recording important civic actions and decisions on stone slabs. Fifteen “time warps” allow you to compare the appearance and condition of the Acropolis today to the year of the virtual tour.
